How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session

10 Tips to Prepare for a Stress-Free Newborn Session

Bringing your newborn in for their first photo session is such an exciting time! These early moments are fleeting, and capturing them allows you to preserve precious memories. To help ensure a smooth and stress-free experience, here are some tips on how to prepare for your newborn session:

1. Timing is Key

The best time to photograph newborns is within the first 8-25 days after birth. During this period, babies are still very sleepy and can be easily posed. If you haven’t booked your session yet, try to schedule it while you’re still pregnant to ensure availability.

2. Keep Your Baby Sleepy

A sleepy baby makes the session run much smoother, so try to keep your baby awake for a little while before your session. This can help them fall into a deep sleep once you arrive. Feeding your baby right before the session is also a great way to ensure they’re content and sleepy.

3. Dress Your Baby for Comfort

Simple is best when dressing your baby. Loose-fitting clothes are ideal as they don’t leave marks on the skin. If possible, bring your baby in a snap-front outfit for easy undressing without disturbing them. We’ll handle all the adorable wraps, outfits, and props during the session.

4. Create a Warm Environment

Newborns love warmth, so I keep the studio cozy to help them feel comfortable. If your session is at home, you might want to turn up the heat slightly to mimic this environment. Feel free to dress in layers so you’re comfortable too!

5. Bring the Essentials

Pack a diaper bag with all the essentials, including diapers, wipes, extra formula (if applicable), and a pacifier (even if your baby doesn’t typically use one). A pacifier can be a lifesaver in helping soothe your baby during certain poses.

6. Relax and Enjoy the Moment

I’m here to take care of everything, from posing your baby to ensuring their safety throughout the session. You can sit back, relax, and enjoy watching these precious moments come to life. If you’re comfortable, feel free to bring a book, your favorite podcast, or just take some time to rest.

7. Let Me Know About Your Preferences

If there are specific colors, props, or setups you love, don’t hesitate to share them with me ahead of time. I want your session to reflect your style and preferences, so your input is always welcome.

8. Siblings and Family Photos

If you’d like to include siblings or family members, let me know beforehand so we can plan accordingly. Dress everyone in neutral or coordinating colors for timeless results. I recommend keeping sibling participation to the beginning or end of the session to make things easier for everyone.

9. Prepare for a Flexible Schedule

Newborn sessions can take 2-3 hours, allowing time for feedings, diaper changes, and soothing. Don’t worry if things don’t go exactly as planned—your baby’s needs come first, and we’ll take breaks as needed.

10. Trust the Process

As a professional newborn photographer, I’ve worked with countless babies and understand their unique needs. Your baby’s comfort and safety are my top priorities. Trust that we’ll capture beautiful moments no matter what!
